How to Tell if the Problem is the Ad, the Offer, or the Site
When ads don't deliver results, the first instinct is to blame the advertising platform. The truth, however, is that success depends on three pillars: the ad, the offer, and the site. If one of them falters, the entire system collapses.
Pillar 1: The Ad (The problem is creative)
If your ad has a low CTR (Click-Through Rate), meaning people aren't clicking on it, the problem is the ad itself. Maybe the image is boring, the headline doesn't grab attention, or you're simply not speaking your audience's language. In this case, there's no point in changing the site until you get people to reach it in the first place. Solution: Test new hooks and visuals.
Pillar 2: The Site (The problem is experience)
If you have a high CTR (people are clicking) but they leave the site immediately (high Bounce Rate), the problem is the website. Maybe it loads too slowly, looks unprofessional, or its mobile version is broken. The customer was intrigued by the ad, but the reality of the site turned them off. Check if the site content matches the promise of the ad.
Pillar 3: The Offer (The problem is product or price)
This is the hardest problem to admit. If people browse products, add them to the cart, but don't complete the order, the problem is likely the offer. Maybe the price is too high, shipping is expensive, or you lack enough trust (lack of reviews). The ad did its job, the site is convenient, but the proposal itself isn't tempting enough to make someone part with their money.
How to Diagnose via Numbers?
Look at the funnel step by step:
- Low impressions = low budget or wrong targeting.
- Low CTR (below 0.8%) = bad creative/ad.
- High CTR but low time on site = technical issues with the site.
- Many "Add to Cart" but 0 sales = problem with price, shipping, or checkout process.
To have a successful business, you must work on all three elements simultaneously. Even the best digital agency cannot save a product that no one wants through a site that doesn't work. But when all three elements are in sync, results are inevitable.
Diagnostic Checklist:
- Is your CTR above 1%? (If not – change the ads)
- Does your site load under 3 seconds? (If not – optimize speed)
- Did you compare your prices with the top 3 competitors today?
- Do you have at least 5 visible positive reviews on the product page?
- Is the ordering process easy (max 3 steps)?
- Does the promise in the ad match 100% with what's on the site?
